Silicon photomultipliers (SiPMs) are solid-state devices built from thousands of microscopic light-sensitive cells, each capable of detecting single photons. By combining the outputs of these cells, the sensor produces both photon-counting precision and a wide dynamic range. Unlike older vacuum photomultipliers, SiPMs are compact, robust, and compatible with modern semiconductor processes, which makes them easier to scale and integrate. Because of their speed and sensitivity, they are now standard components in applications ranging from LiDAR and medical imaging to high-energy physics.
